Dance for gold in Green Valley

Green Valley Square And Round Dance Club invites YOU to join us in an activity which is fun for all ages, good mental and physical exercise, and is enjoyed around the world. The ancestors of square dancing are the French Quadrille and the Cotillion and the English country dance. Some of the calls come like “do-si-do” come from that heritage.

Modern Square Dancing began in the 1930s pioneered by a superintendent of a Colorado school district, Lloyd Shaw. Square dancing in Green Valley was started by Irma Schaffnit in 1965 and the Green Valley Square and Round Dance Club has been a focus for learning square dancing, having fun and forming new friendships ever since then. Modern Square dancing is done to all kinds of music – rock, pop, jazz, country, bluegrass etc. We also teach and do Round Dancing which our Cuer (the one who “cues” you what to do) calls “partner dancing on training wheels.” Round Dancing with a partner uses two step, waltz, cha-cha, rhumba, and foxtrot music.

We are fortunate to have as our square dance instructor and caller Rick Gittleman who has a wealth of experience in teaching and calling. And we are also fortunate to have Lynn Van Atta as our Round Dance Cuer and teacher, certainly one of the better cuers in the country.

Come and join us for our free introductory dance party in the fall, come and learn at basic class, and see what a great hobby this can be. Dress for the introductory dance is casual as is the dress for classes and workshops. Details of schedule and venues are below; drop-in class fee is $7; workshop and club dance fee is $6 for Green Valley Recreation (GVR) members and $8 for non-GVR members. While This is a GVR club, non- GVR members are always welcome to participate. Feel free to call if you have questions. Hope to see you on the dance floor!
